The first GIS bay shipment has arrived — 8 containers. Before we open anything, I want you to verify the clean room conditions in the assembly hall. The GIS specification requires temperature 20-25°C, humidity below 60%, and airborne particle count less than 500,000 per cubic meter for particles above 0.5 micron. These are non-negotiable for opening SF6 compartments.

I've checked the environmental monitoring station. Temperature: 22°C. Humidity: 48%. Particle count: 127,000 — well within the limit. The positive air pressure system is working and the air lock entry protocol is in place. All personnel entering must wear clean room suits, hair nets, and shoe covers. Tools must be cleaned before entering. I'm satisfied. You can proceed with the unpacking.

We'll start with the bay alignment. The first step is setting the reference level — we establish a datum line along the entire bay length. Each GIS module has pre-marked support points. I'm using a laser level for this — tolerances are ±1 mm in the horizontal plane and ±2 mm in elevation. Once the supports are aligned and grouted, we bolt the modules together flange by flange, starting from the center circuit breaker working outward. The O-ring seals on each flange must be inspected under a magnifying lamp — a single hair or dust particle on the O-ring can cause an SF6 leak that takes weeks to troubleshoot.

The GIS assembly is complete for all 6 bays. We've filled each gas compartment with SF6 to the rated pressure — 0.6 MPa for the breaker compartments, 0.45 MPa for the busbar and disconnector compartments. Now we need to run the site acceptance tests. Where do we start?

Start with the gas tightness test. We wrap each flange connection with sealed plastic film and leave it for 24 hours, then use a halogen leak detector to sample the trapped air at each joint. The maximum allowable leak rate is 0.5% per year per gas compartment. For a 100-liter compartment at 0.6 MPa, that means detection below 1 ppm in the test envelope. We have 148 flange joints to test — this will take about 3 days with two teams.

After gas tightness: SF6 moisture measurement — dew point must be below -35°C at rated pressure. Then main circuit resistance measurement — each bay should be within 110% of the factory test value. Then insulation resistance and power frequency withstand test on the main circuit. Finally, mechanical operation tests on all breakers and disconnectors — open-close at minimum, rated, and maximum control voltage. Total testing duration: about 10 working days for 6 bays. One critical note: any SF6 released during testing must be captured by the gas recovery cart — we can't vent SF6 to atmosphere. Each kilogram released has the global warming equivalent of 23,500 kg of CO2. The environmental monitoring is as important as the electrical.
